THIS IS A NEW PROMOTIONAL ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one year, but can be extended.
Qualified applicants must be current County employees and have completed the equivalent of six months of continuous service following a regular appointment in the Alameda County classified service (non-classified includes the District Attorney’s Office) by Tuesday, July 19, 2016. A regular appointment does not include provisional, TAP (Temporary Assignment Pool), or STEP-UP appointments.

EXISTING VACANCIES
While the immediate vacancies for these positions are within the Probation Department, Public Health, and the Social Services Agency, please note that the eligible list resulting from this recruitment and selection process may be utilized for other future vacancies which may arise within the next year for these and other County Departments/Agencies.
THE POSITION:
The Supervising Clerk specification describes three levels of supervisory clerical classes and identifies the range of responsibility and the type of assignment which distinguishes each level within the series.
The basic function of positions in the Supervising Clerk series is to plan, assign, evaluate and supervise the work and operations of a clerical staff consisting of at least two or more full time subordinate employees; to provide training and instruction and make decisions on difficult or sensitive clerical problems; and to accomplish all related procedural and clerical duties and responsibilities in their assigned areas through subordinate employees; and to do related duties as required.
Supervising Clerk I is the first level in the supervisory clerical class series; positions in this class supervise a staff of fewer than the equivalent of 10 full time subordinates.
Positions allocated to this level must meet one of the following minimum standards:
l. Directing the work of and using independent judgment in the evaluation of the performance of, the equivalent of three or more full time subordinates.
Or 2. Directing the work of and using independent judgment in the evaluation of the performance of the equivalent of two or more full time subordinates when the work site is geographically remote from the next higher level of supervision.
Or 3. When the position's immediate supervisor is located within close proximity to the position's work site, incumbent is delegated authority to hire, discipline, recommend on discharge, and resolve grievances of the equivalent of two or more full time subordinates.
The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:
NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF the following steps:
1) A review of candidates' applications to verify possession of the minimum qualifications. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process.
2) A written examination which will be weighted as 50% of the candidate's final examination score. Those candidates attaining a passing score on the written exam will move on to the next step in the examination process.
3) An oral examination which will be weighted as 50% of the candidate's final examination score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises. In addition to establishing an eligibility list, this examination process may serve as the final selection interview for vacancies in this classification.
