Introduction

DESCRIPTION

THE AGENCY
The mission of the General Services Agency (GSA) is to provide high quality, cost effective, and timely support services for County departments and other public agencies, so they can better serve the public and business community. GSA delivers a host of support services to County departments and agencies. These services fall into several major categories: Technical — architectural, engineering, energy and hazardous materials management; Building Maintenance — building maintenance and repairs, janitorial services and minor remodeling and alterations; Construction — new facilities and major remodeling; Procurement — purchasing and contract administration; Fleet Services; Childcare Planning; Human Resources, Payroll, Information Systems and Parking Administration.

Our Agency is working on many programs to make it easier for vendors to do business with the County. This GSA web-site, with its interactive capabilities and upcoming electronic procurement and commerce enhancements, is one step in that direction. Another new and exciting program is County’s Small, Local, and Emerging Business Program (SLEB) which promotes economic growth for the County community

THE POSITION
Under general supervision, to perform preventive mechanical and electronic maintenance and repair work on automatic guided vehicle systems; and to perform other related duties.

Positions in the class of Automatic Guided Vehicle Technician are located in the General Services Agency's Building Maintenance Department at the Santa Rita Jail. This class is distinguished from the class of Building Equipment Maintenance Worker in that the latter class performs the maintenance and repair of plumbing fixtures, heating, ventilating, refrigeration and electrical equipment, while the class of Automatic Guided Vehicle Technician performs the maintenance and repair on the material handling vehicle system.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications stated below, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated a track record of success in the following areas:

  • Possess the skill and ability to troubleshoot and diagnose electronic, mechanical and electrical equipment
  • Finds fulfillment in creative tinkering to find the solution to mechanical, electronic and electrical equipment
  • Enjoys engaging in activities that get hands dirty
  • Takes immediate action to identify and solve problems and is willing to go beyond the job requirements to achieve goal
  • Proven safety record as demonstrated by the ability to identify safety issues and take corrective action. Understands and follows safety precautions surrounding welding, power tools and related areas and is aware of working environment.
  • Maintains a high level of performance and can remain flexible and positive in the face of conflicting work demands, changing needs and customer demands
  • Ability to build and development collaborative relationships in order to successfully meet goals as demonstrated by a free sharing of ideas and openness to the ideas of others.
  • Demonstrated a commitment to exceptions customer service
  • Proven experience working independently

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

The equivalent of two years’ full-time experience in the maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment.

Special Requirements:

Employees are required to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:

Knowledge of:

• Common tools, materials, equipment and methods used in the repair of electronic vehicles.
• Equipment and methods used in welding.
• Basic electricity.
• Basic electronics.
• Computers and software.

Ability to:

• Read and understand schematics and ladder relay logic.
• Understand design techniques in digital electronics.
• Diagnose and correct vehicle problems.
• Perform numerical operations.
• Communicate orally and in writing.
• Work in close proximity to inmates.
• Work in confined spaces.
• Lift up to 70 lbs.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

The examination will consist of the following steps: A review of the candidates' applications and supplemental questionnaires to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process which is a performance examination which will be weighted as 40% of the candidate's final examination score. Those candidates scoring highest on the performance examination will move on to the next step in the examination process, an oral interview which will be weighted as 60% of the candidate's final examination score. CANDIDATES MUST ATTAIN A QUALIFYING RATING ON EACH PORTION OF THIS EXAMINATION. We reserve the right to make changes to the announced examination components.
