Introduction

THIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION.  The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one year, but can be extended.

DESCRIPTION

THE AGENCY

The mission of the General Services Agency (GSA) is to provide high quality, cost effective, and timely support services for County departments and other public agencies, so they can better serve the public and business community. GSA delivers a host of support services to County departments and agencies. These services fall into several major categories: Technical — architectural, engineering, energy and hazardous materials management; Building Maintenance — building maintenance and repairs, janitorial services and minor remodeling and alterations; Construction — new facilities and major remodeling; Procurement — purchasing and contract administration; Fleet Services; Childcare Planning; Human Resources, Payroll, Information Systems and Parking Administration.

Our Agency is working on many programs to make it easier for vendors to do business with the County. This GSA web-site, with its interactive capabilities and upcoming electronic procurement and commerce enhancements, is one step in that direction. Another new and exciting program is County’s Small, Local, and Emerging Business Program (SLEB) which promotes economic growth for the County community.

   

THE POSITION

Under general supervision, to perform the work of a journey-level carpenter and cabinetmaker; and to do related work as required.

 

IDEAL CANDIDATE

In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications for the position of Carpenter, the ideal candidate will possess the following critical attributes:

-Outstanding carpentry/cabinetmaker skills necessary to repair or maintain existing structures as well as to build cabinets, shelving, etc. 

-Strong attention to detail resulting in flawless, quality product. 

-Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with all trades associated with building maintenance; a willingness to learn from others and to share knowledge. 

Commitment to exceptional customer service.

-Effectively manages time by appropriately prioritizing work enabling a high level of performance while allowing consideration for changing needs and customer demand. 

-Proven safety record as demonstrated by the ability to identify safety issues and take corrective action.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I

The equivalent of four years’ full-time experience as a Building Maintenance Worker II in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority and Consolidated Courts.)

Or II
Education:

Successful completion of a recognized four-year apprenticeship in the carpentry/cabinetmaker trade.

And
Experience:

The equivalent of three years’ experience as a journey-level carpenter or cabinetmaker. Additional experience as a journey-level carpenter or cabinetmaker may substitute for an apprenticeship on a year for year basis.

License:

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

Special Requirements:

Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds safely.
Must be able and willing to work outside in all types of weather conditions.
Must be able to climb and work from ladders and/or scaffolding.
Must be able and willing to work in confined areas.
Must be able to use a respirator.
Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:  

Knowledge of:

• Modern methods, materials, hand and power tools, and equipment used in rough and finished carpentry and in cabinet making.
• Building, Fire, Life Safety and OSHA safety codes.
• General construction safety practices.
• Hazardous Materials Awareness (asbestos, lead paint, MSDS).
• Basic computer skills including knowledge of Outlook.
• Mathematical calculations used in the carpentry trade.


Ability to:

• Skillfully use the tools and equipment of the carpenter's and cabinetmaker's trades.
• Work safely.
• Communicate clearly orally and in writing.
• Provide excellent customer service.
• Follow written and oral instructions.
• Work independently as well as part of a team.
• Plan, organize, prioritize and keep track of assignments and materials.
• Collaborate and coordinate with other trades.
• Supervise non-journey workers.
• Adapt to changing work priorities.
• Keep tools and materials secure.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF the following steps: 1) A review of candidates' applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process. 2) A performance exam which will be weighted as 40% of the candidates final examination score. 3) Those candidates that pass the performance examination will be invited to the final test component which is an oral interview that will be weighted as 60% of the candidate's final examination score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises. 

CANDIDATES MUST ATTAIN A QUALIFYING RATING ON EACH PORTION OF THIS EXAMINATION.
