THIS IS A NEW PROMOTIONAL ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION.  The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one year but can be extended. Current employment and completion by 8/10/2015, of the equivalent of six months of continuous service following a regular appointment in the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District service.

DESCRIPTION

THE HAYWARD AREA RECREATION AND PARK DISTRICT

The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District is an independent special use district providing park and recreation services for over 275,000 residents living within a 64 mile area which includes the cities of Hayward, Castro Valley, San Lorenzo and the unincorporated Ashland, Cherryland and Fairview districts.  The park district known locally as H.A.R.D. is the largest recreation district  in the state of California.  The mission of the park district is improving the quality of life for citizens of all ages by providing a variety of recreational activities, special events, facilities and services that encourage lifelong fitness and fun.

THE POSITION

Under general supervision, to supervise contractual custodial service; to serve as working supervisor of custodian personnel; to perform related work as required.

The Custodial Foreman is a first line supervisory position reporting to the Custodian Supervisor in the Custodian Division. The Custodial Foreman is responsible primarily for the supervision of the cleaning of the buildings under contract with a custodial services company. The Custodial Foreman is required to be on duty in the very early morning hours to inspect the work of contract custodians and to bring deficiencies to the attention of the Custodian Supervisor. Deficiencies need correction on short notice so that the building is tidy and ready for public use that same morning. Also, the Custodial Foreman aids the Custodian Supervisor in the supervision of custodian personnel in the maintenance of District buildings. This position differs from the next lower class Custodian by the Custodial Foreman having lead/foreman responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A combination of training and experience which demonstrates that a person has obtained the required knowledge and is able to perform the required work (with reasonable accommodation, if needed). A person with the following combined training and experience would typically qualify to compete in a selection process:

EITHER I

Experience:
The equivalent of one (1) year of full time experience in the class of Custodian in the HARD service.

OR  II

Experience:
The equivalent of two (2) years of full time, paid experience performing custodial work in offices or institutions.

License: Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license and a good driving record.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above minimum qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge, skills and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following:
Knowledge of:

• Modern custodial methods, materials, and equipment.

Ability to:

• Supervise the work of others.
• Keep comprehensive records.
• Work with other employees and Janitorial Services Contractor.
• Read and write and clearly speak effectively.
• Exhibit a high customer service priority.
• Establish and maintain open and honest communications with co-workers at all levels of the organization.
• Use and operate sanders, buffers, vacuum cleaners and similar equipment in the course of janitorial duties.
• Within CALOSHA guidelines, withstand periods of physical exposure to the presence of fumes, odors, dust and pollen without incapacitating adverse effect.
• Safely transport, lift and handle bulky objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

The examination will consist of the following steps:

  1. A review of the candidates’ application to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process.
  2. An oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the candidates’ final examination score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises.
