THIS IS A NEW PROMOTIONAL ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION.  The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one year but can be extended. Qualified applicants must be current HARD employees and have completed the equivalent of six months of continuous service following a regular appointment by THE LAST DAY TO FILE, 04/14/15.  A regular appointment does not include provisional, TAP (Temporary Assignment Pool), or STEP-UP appointments. Applications must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services Department by 5:00 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing.  Postmarks are not accepted.  Applications will only be accepted on-line.

DESCRIPTION

THE HAYWARD AREA RECREATION AND PARK DISTRICT 

The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District is an independent special use district providing park and recreation services for over 275,000 residents living within a 64 mile area which includes the City of Hayward, Castro Valley, San Lorenzo and the unincorporated Ashland, Cherryland and Fairview districts.  The Park District, known locally as  "H.A.R.D." is the largest recreation district in the State of California.  The mission of the Park District is improving the quality of life for citizens of all ages by providing a variety of recreational activities, special events, facilities and services that encourage lifelong learning, fitness and fun.

THE POSITION

Under general direction, to supervise the custodian section, including responsibility for contractual services; to provide high quality customer service; and to perform related work as required.

The Custodian Supervisor serves as supervisor of the custodian section. The Custodian Supervisor has responsibility to coordinate the cleaning of buildings geographically distributed throughout the District, which includes the work of District custodians, along with custodial services supplied by contract with building maintenance companies. The satisfactory completion of cleaning work is made more difficult by the necessity of planning and performing such work around the activities that take place during the day or evening. This class differs from the next lower class Senior Custodian by the Senior Custodian aiding the Custodian Supervisor in the supervision of custodian personnel. This position reports to the Recreation Superintendent.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A combination of training and experience which demonstrates that a person has obtained the required knowledge and is able to perform the required work (with reasonable accommodation, if needed). A person with the following combined training and experience would typically qualify to compete in a selection process:

Experience:

The equivalent of three (3) years of full time experience performing custodian work in offices or institutions, at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

Or II

The equivalent of two (2) years of full-time experience in the class of Custodian or an equivalent, or higher level class, performing similar duties in the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District.

License:

Valid California Motor Vehicle operator’s license and a good driving record.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:

Knowledge of:

• Modern custodial cleaning methods, materials, and equipment including the use of power-driven waxing and buffing machines, soaps, detergents, waxes, and cleaning compounds and chemicals.
• Principles of supervision.
• Computer applications related to work.
• Safe work practices and safety standards.

Ability to:

• Supervise the work of others.
• Keep comprehensive work records.
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Exhibit a high level of customer service priority.
• Establish and maintain open and honest communications with co-workers at all levels of the organization.
• Use and operate sanders, buffers, vacuum cleaners and similar equipment in the course of janitorial duties.
• Within CALOSHA guidelines, withstand periods of physical exposure to the presence of fumes, odors, dust and pollen without incapacitating adverse effect.
• Safely transport, and lift objects weighing up to forty (40) pounds.
• Plan and prioritize staffing and required work priorities.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

The examination will consist of the following steps: 1) A review of candidates' applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process. 2)  An oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the candidate's final examination score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises.  CANDIDATES MUST ATTAIN A QUALIFYING RATING ON EACH PORTION OF THIS EXAMINATION.

  • Ten (10) working days paid vacation each year; fifteen (15) days after five (5) years of service; and twenty    (20) days after thirteen (13) years of service. -Fourteen (14) paid holidays a year. -
