 Current employment and completion by 02/18/2015, of the equivalent of six months of continuous service following a regular appointment in the Alameda County classified service (non-classified includes the District Attorney’s Office, the Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts). A regular appointment does not include provisional, TAP (Temporary Assignment Pool), or STEP-UP appointments. DESCRIPTION

THE POSITION

Under general direction, Lieutenants administer a Community Re-entry Center, a Planning and Research Unit, a Criminal Investigation Unit, a Central Identification Bureau, a Records, Warrants, Dispatch and Crime Analysis Unit, or a Coroner’s Bureau; to assist in the administration and management of a large detention facility or substation; to perform a particular assignment in the Civil and Court functions; to perform staff inspection services, making complete investigations and necessary reports regarding department policies, practices and procedures as directed by the Sheriff; to perform in specific roles for contract services as directed by the Sheriff; and to perform staff administrative duties and related work as required.

Incumbents of positions in this class may be assigned operational responsibility for personnel and activities on a shift basis in a large substation of the department or may have continuous administrative responsibility for a small functional unit or group of activities. The class is distinguished from the next higher class of Captain in that the higher class has a larger range of command responsibilities, organizational authority, and policy decisions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:

Experience:

Candidates must have completed their probationary period as a Sergeant in the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office

AND possess the following:

Either

The equivalent of eighteen months of experience in the class of Sergeant with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.

Or

A minimum of four years of California law enforcement experience at the rank of Sergeant or above, and possession of a Supervisory Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).

License:

Possession of a valid California motor vehicle operator’s license.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above minimum qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge, and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

• Internal departmental operations and chain of command.
• Principles of organization, administration and deployment of personnel and equipment for law enforcement purposes.

• Basic data processing capabilities and familiarity with systems used in the Sheriff’s Office.

During this time, your application will be reviewed to ensure that you meet the minimum qualifications as stated above. All candidates will receive an email notification regarding the results of the application review by the end of the following week, no later than Monday, March 2, 2015.

Assessment Center / Oral Examination

Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the position will be invited to an assessment center which will consist of the following:

  • A written examination, consisting of short answer and essay questions, which will comprise of 33% of the final score.
  • An in-basket exercise, which will comprise of 33% of the final overall score.
  • An oral examination which may include a situational exercise, this will comprise of 34% of the final score.

During the interview examination, you will be asked to provide examples of past work experiences that highlight the job-related core competencies that successful incumbents of the position possess. This type of interviewing is called behavioral-based interviewing and is the best predictor of future job success. Your interview examination may include a situational exercise where you may have to perform mock job duties to prove your level of competency.

Candidates planning on participating in the Lieutenant's Promotional Examination process may assist in their preparation for such examination by reviewing the following information/written material: Alameda County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) training bulletins, ACSO General Orders Manual, ACSO Rules and Regulations Manual, California Peace Officer's Legal Sourcebook (published by the California State Attorney General's Office), ACSO Strategic Plan, Alameda County Deputy Sheriff's Association Memorandum of Understanding, Strategic Leadership Succession Plan, and the Services Employees International Union Memorandum of Understanding.



CANDIDATES MUST ATTAIN A QUALIFYING RATING ON EACH PORTION OF THIS EXAMINATION.
