THE AGENCY
MISSION of the Social Services Agency
To promote the economic social well-being of individuals, families, neighborhoods and communities.
The Alameda County Social Services Agency is comprised of 2,200 men and women working collectively and in partnership with community-based organizations, neighborhood groups and policy makers to serve the needs of the community.
The Agency assists approximately 11.3 percent of Alameda County's residents. Benefits programs contribute over $278 million to the local economy through cash assistance and CalFresh. Every month more than 52,000 people receive CalWORKs (assistance for families with children), CalFresh and General Assistance. Every month health insurance is made available to more than 78,000 people through the Medi-Cal program. Every month more than 11,000 frail, elderly and disabled individuals receive in home care, adult protection and support managing their affairs, and throughout the year 16,000 seniors will receive services through the Area Agency on Aging. 3,700 children are in foster care. More than 1,600 reports of child abuse or neglect are filed with SSA each month. Emergency shelter is made available to 415 people nightly. THE POSITION
Under general direction, to supervise, review, and evaluate the work of Adult Protective Services in the Department of Adult and Aging Services, including Adult Protective Services Worker I’s and II’s and/or Assistant Public Guardian-Conservators.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal Adult Protective Service Supervisor candidate will possess:
• Broad knowledge related to the laws and principles of Adult Protective Services, with an understanding and/or willingness to gain understanding of the principles and practices of public administration, program planning, and development.
• Professional knowledge and understanding regarding the normal aging process, the impact of age-related illnesses, mental illness, and developmental disabilities on the ability to independently manage daily activities, and the psycho-social dynamics of self-neglect or neglect or abuse by a third party.
• Understanding of the role of the Social Services Agency, including its policies, procedures, program, and services.
• Outstanding communication and listening skills that clearly articulate information verbally and in writing.
• Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of individuals with varying ideas and job functions; ability to demonstrate interpersonal sensitivity.
• Ability to effectively direct and monitor employee performance, develop and implement improvement plans when performance does not meet requirements, and take corrective action as needed.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain focus while coaching employees who are making diagnostic risk assessments and decisions regarding abuse or neglect intervention and remediation.
• Exceptional organizational skills, including the ability to effectively handle changing priorities.
• Proficient computer skills, including competence in the use of AACTS or Panoramic.

• Casework methods and techniques with particular reference to the problems in adult neglect, exploitation, and abuse.

THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF the following steps: 1) A review of candidates' applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process. 2) An oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the candidate's final examination score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises. CANDIDATES MUST ATTAIN A QUALIFYING RATING ON EACH PORTION OF THIS EXAMINATION.
