Introduction

This is a continuous filing exam with screening cut-offs weekly at 5:00 pm every Friday.  (Be advised that the cut-off date may change depending on the number of applications received.)

Supplemental Questionnaire:  A properly completed Supplemental Questionnaire must be submitted with each application.  Applications and Supplemental Questionnaires must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services Department by 5:00 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing. Postmarks are not accepted.  Failure to submit the Supplemental Questionnaire will result in disqualification.

HEALTH CARE SERVICES AGENCY

Alameda County's Health Services Program is administered by the Health Care Services Agency and includes the following program areas: Behavioral Health Care, Public Health, Environmental Health, and Agency Administration/Indigent Health. The ultimate mission of the Health Care Services Agency is to provide fully integrated health care services through a comprehensive network of public and private partnerships that ensure optimal health and well-being and respect the diversity of all residents. THE POSITIONS

Under general supervision, Nutritionists II assist in planning, developing, and conducting a component of a nutrition program; provide consultative services on menus and nutrition; and perform related work as required.  This is the journey-level class in the Nutritionist series and incumbents are responsible for performing the more complex components of a nutrition program. This position is distinguished from the Senior Nutritionist which is assigned total responsibility for planning and monitoring countywide programs comprising multiple components in their design and function.

EXISTING VACANCIES

This is a general recruitment which may be used to fill multiple vacancies which arise over the next year.  Immediate vacancies for this position may be described in more detail below; however, please note that the eligible list resulting from this recruitment and selection process may be utilized for other future vacancies which may arise throughout Alameda County within the next year for this and other County Departments. 

Women, Infants & Children (WIC) Supplemental Nutrition Program:  WIC is a national nutrition education program that promotes healthy eating. Clients get nutrition advice, help with breastfeeding, and referrals to other community services. Clients also get special checks to buy healthy food items such as fruits and vegetables, milk, cheese, whole grains, cereals, pure juice, and eggs. Studies show that clients who get WIC have healthier pregnancies and healthier children. WIC serves pregnant and breastfeeding women and parents raising infants or children under the age of 5 years. Foster parents, guardians and single fathers who have custody of their children can also get WIC. 

There is expected to be several vacancies in the upcoming months including a position designated for a qualified bilingual person who speaks English and is also fluent in Spanish.  Ideal candidates will also be willing and available to work weekend and evening work shifts; additionally, some positions may be designated as "Project" positions.  Candidates are encouraged to select their employment preferences to work weekends, evenings and project positions to be considered for immediate vacancies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

These are minimum professional requirements for the position of Nutritionist II:

Either Pattern I:

Experience:  The equivalent of one year of full-time experience in the class of Nutritionist I in the Alameda County classified services. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s offices, Hospital Authority and the consolidated courts.)

Or Pattern II:

Education:  Possession of a Master's degree in nutrition, public health nutrition, or some other appropriate field from a accredited college or university, plus completion of an internship approved by the American Dietetic Association.

Experience: The equivalent of one-year full-time professional experience in public health nutrition or dietetics.

Or Pattern III

Education:  Possession of a Bachelor's degree in nutrition or public health nutrition, or dietetics from an accredited college or university plus completion of an internship approved by the American Dietetic Association.

Experience:  The equivalent of two-years full-time professional experience in public health nutrition or dietetics.

AND

All Patterns Listed Above Also Require:

Licenses and Certificates:  Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license AND a current registration in good standing with the American Dietetic Association.

Knowledge of:

· Principles and practices of current academic nutrition knowledge.
· Principles of nutrition education and medical nutrition therapy for clients.
· Elements of food value, costs and budgeting.

Ability to:

· Plan nutritional programs and coordinate them with other departmental programs.
· Write and speak effectively.
