DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, to fabricate, install, operate, maintain, test and repair low-voltage cabling, audio-visual, electronic security systems and other electronics equipment; to perform other related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Electronic Systems Technicians fabricate, install, operate, test, repair, service and maintain a wide variety of low-voltage cabling and electronic equipment both in the field and in a shop environment. Incumbents repair a variety of electronic equipment, resolve electronics problems, and may instruct others in related work. The Electronic Systems Technician is distinguished from the higher level class of Senior Telecommunications Technician which is responsible for radio and microwave systems and may function as a supervisor. Electronic Systems Technicians work in the Building Maintenance Department of the General Services Agency.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Fabricates electronics equipment from diagrams and written and/or oral instructions.
2. Installs, removes and tests various types of cables including fiber optic, twisted pair, power and radio frequency cables.
3. Installs, removes and repairs telephones, switching equipment, intercoms, public address systems, video cameras and monitors, alarm systems, data communications circuits and other related audio-visual or security system equipment.
4. Tests equipment; measures signal frequencies and power levels in audio-visual applications.
5. Climbs poles and antenna support towers and other structures to install, repair and maintain audio and video transceiver equipment and associated data and power cables.
6. Instructs others when performing tasks which require additional help.
7. Maintains logs and records on repairs and service performed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:

The equivalent of two years of full-time responsible experience in electronics maintenance and repair, which provides the required knowledge skill and abilities stated below.

License:

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicles Operator’s license.

Special Requirements:

Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

• Principles and theories upon which switching equipment, intercoms, public address systems, video cameras and monitors, alarm systems, data circuits and electronics equipment operate.
• Maintenance and repair of switching equipment, intercoms, public address systems, video cameras and monitors, security systems, data circuits and other audio-visual equipment.
• Tools, materials, test equipment and methods used in the electronics maintenance and audio-visual industry.
• Personal computer software/applications, including word processing and spreadsheets.
• Safety practices applicable to the maintenance of electronic systems.

Ability to:

• Read schematic diagrams.
• Diagnose and perform repairs on a wide variety of electronics equipment.
• Use tools and related instruments necessary for testing audio-visual equipment, such as frequency meters, signal generators, oscilloscopes, voltmeters and other measuring devices.
• Repair, maintain, modify and install various types of audio-visual equipment.
• Carry out written and oral instructions.
• Read and interpret electronics drawings and schematics.
• Write clearly and speak concisely and effectively.
• Maintain logs and records of repairs and services performed.
• Deal courteously with those contacted in the course of the work.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTCS:

• Ability and willingness to climb poles, towers and other structures to maintain audio transmission lines, support towers and power lines.
• Ability to lift up to 60 pounds.
