DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, to perform the work of a journey-level carpenter and cabinetmaker; and to do related work as required.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

These positions are located in the Building Maintenance Department of the General Services Agency and report to a Supervisor, Carpentry, Paint and Lock Services. Carpenters perform journey-level carpentry and cabinetmaker work with minimal supervision. This class is distinguished from the higher-level classification of Supervisor, Carpentry, Paint and Lock Services in that the latter is supervisory in nature and has overall responsibility for the operations of a Carpenter/Paint/Locksmith Shop.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.


1. Performs a variety of journey-level carpentry work in remodeling, repairing and maintaining buildings, and other structures within governing codes.
2. Repairs doors, woodwork, fences, roofs, furniture and general building structure articles; repairs door locks and hinges; replaces glass in windows, partitions and other structures.
3. Builds partitions, installs doors and windows and otherwise modifies existing building areas.
4. Performs carpentry work on new construction of buildings and additions to buildings, including building forms, flat finish, stucco and patch work, erecting walls, laying floors, finishing floors, and laying roof materials.
5. Performs patching of existing concrete surfaces.
6. Makes cases, shelving, cabinets, tables, desks, counters, and other wooden fixtures or furniture.
7. Works from blueprints, drawings, pencil sketches, or written and oral specifications and instructions.
8. Estimates for specific jobs and orders supplies through department head as needed.
9. Maintains storeroom, materials, and tools in good condition.
10. May provide direction to Building Maintenance Workers (I and II) and Laborers.
11. May be required to do milling, woodturning, and pattern work.
12. Will be required to do sheet-rock work.
13. Will be required to sharpen hand tools.
14. May assist other trades.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I

The equivalent of four years’ full-time experience as a Building Maintenance Worker II in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority and Consolidated Courts.)

Or II
Education:

Successful completion of a recognized four-year apprenticeship in the carpentry/cabinetmaker trade.

And
Experience:

The equivalent of three years’ experience as a journey-level carpenter or cabinetmaker. Additional experience as a journey-level carpenter or cabinetmaker may substitute for an apprenticeship on a year for year basis.

License:

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

Special Requirements:

Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds safely.
Must be able and willing to work outside in all types of weather conditions.
Must be able to climb and work from ladders and/or scaffolding.
Must be able and willing to work in confined areas.
Must be able to use a respirator.
Must comply with the medical surveillance program related to lead and asbestos, as required by OSHA/Cal-OSHA.
Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.


Knowledge of:

• Modern methods, materials, hand and power tools, and equipment used in rough and finished carpentry and in cabinet making.
• Building, Fire, Life Safety and OSHA safety codes.
• General construction safety practices.
• Hazardous Materials Awareness (asbestos, lead paint, MSDS).
• Basic computer skills including knowledge of Outlook.
• Mathematical calculations used in the carpentry trade.


Ability to:

• Skillfully use the tools and equipment of the carpenter's and cabinetmaker's trades.
• Work safely.
• Communicate clearly orally and in writing.
• Provide excellent customer service.
