DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, to aid in providing public safety services by observing assigned areas and activities, documenting and reporting suspicious activities to appropriate Sheriff’s Office staff, to assist the general public and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Sheriff’s Safety Aides will work at selected locations as designated by the Sheriff’s Office. This class is distinguished from the class of Sheriff’s Technician in that the duties assigned to Sheriff’s Safety Aides are neither as extensive nor as technical as those assigned to the former class. Sheriff’s Safety Aides will attend and must successfully complete the Sheriff’s Safety Aide Field Training Program. Sheriff’s Safety Aides are primarily assigned to a fixed or rotating post to observe specific areas and activities and to report those observations, either verbally or in writing, to the sworn officers of the Sheriff’s Office.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Provides public safety functions, including observations of specific areas both indoors and outside, and report these observations verbally and in writing to sworn members of the Sheriff’s Office.

2. Direct traffic (both auto and pedestrian) to ensure the orderly flow of traffic and the safety of pedestrians.

3. Completes timely and accurate reports of observations while assigned to a fixed or rotating post. Maintains logs and other documentation as required.

4. Operates public safety communications equipment (portable or mobile two-way radios).

5. Controls entry of both personnel and vehicles to prevent unauthorized access to the restricted/controlled areas by checking identification cards and vehicle registrations.

6. May be required to prepare written incident reports.

7. May be required to operate a motor vehicle during roving patrol or to pick up/deliver vehicles from the motor pool.


8. May issue citations for violations of parking rules and regulations.

9. Provides information, directions and assistance to the general public and/or employees; may request and receive assistance from Sheriff’s Office sworn staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:

Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or high school proficiency certificate.

Any combination of experience, training and/or education, which would allow a candidate to possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities, required below.

License:

Possession of a valid California State Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

Special Requirements:

Must have eyesight correctable to 20/20 with or without the use of corrective lenses, including freedom from color blindness.

Must hear and speak suitably for normal conversation

Must pass a thorough background investigation.

Must be available to work varying shifts of 8, 10, or 12 hours, days, evenings, weekends and rotating shifts including weekends and holidays.

Must be able to accept positions throughout Alameda County and be subject to rotation of assignments.

Must wear a uniform as specified by the Sheriff.

• Effectively communicate verbally with the public and other employees.
