DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, to provide assistance to professional personnel in Public Health clinics and in the community by performing routine duties or investigations; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Public Health Nursing Assistant I’s perform various routine tasks at clinics and provide services to clients in the community. Incumbents of positions in the next higher class, Public Health Nursing Assistant II’s, assess family situations, act more independently in dealing with an assigned caseload and perform clinic duties, which require more knowledge or training. These positions are flexibly staffed.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Prepares examination rooms for Public Health clinics, ensuring that they are in order and stocked with the necessary supplies and instruments for the type of clinic to be held.

2. Works with the general public; performs health screening tests, such as height, weight, temperature, pulse, and respirations; dip stick urine, vision; instructs patient in obtaining specific laboratory specimens; completes lab slips and attaches to specimens; sterilizes equipment.

3. Assists physician or nurse practitioner during examination.

4. Assists patient with medical history form or in registering for clinics.

5. Under the supervision of a Public Health Nurse, makes home visits to:
· Assist patients in arranging for medical appointments.
· Encourage patient to keep and make necessary appointments for medical care.
· Locate lost persons for medical follow up.
· Arrange and or accompany patients to medical or dental appointments.
· Perform limited recordings of observations and results of visits.
· Supervise and assist children in constructive play during group activities in clinic and community setting.
· Report additional cases found to Public Health Nurse.

6. May act as an interpreter in public health clinics or in the field, if bilingual.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

License:

A driver's license may be required in order to carry out field assignments.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

The following knowledge and abilities are required:

Abilities:

· Reading and implementing oral and written instructions.
· Learning routine clinic procedures such as performing health screening tests, sterilizing equipment, etc.
· Writing legibly in order to keep written records and making observations.
