DESCRIPTION
Under general direction, to install, maintain and repair high- and low-voltage circuits, motors, controls and equipment; and to perform other job-related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is a journey-level position primarily concerned with the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical circuits, motors, instruments and control equipment in facilities common to public water treatment and distribution systems. This level of work covers the entire scope of the electrical trade.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Installs, repairs, maintains, troubleshoots, inspects, tests and replaces instruments, electrical circuits, transformer switches, lighting fixtures, motors, outlets, control panels, electrical components of the telemetering, catholic protection and communications systems.

2. Troubleshoots and performs diagnostic work on a variety of electrical equipment.

3. Installs conduit and pulls wire for motors, control panels, lighting fixtures, outlets and other purposes; makes cable splices of various sizes and difficulty.

4. Performs phase balancing operations and makes load computations on a variety of electrical circuits.

5. Updates wiring diagrams and drawings of electrical installations as changes are made.

6. Makes rough estimates of labor, materials, and supplies required to perform specific assignment.

7. Inspects, maintains, repairs and tests power generating and related equipment.

8. Plans, repairs, and carries out preventative maintenance programs.

9. May coordinate and oversee contracted electrical and instrumentation work.

10. Assists in the development and design of new and redesigned electrical service.

11. Performs other work as required in cooperation with maintenance, such as pump repairs, lubrication, pipeline repairs, air compressor, air or operated equipment repairs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either I

Experience:

The equivalent of two years of full-time experience as an Electrician in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

Or II

Experience:

The equivalent of fours years of full-time, increasingly responsible journey-level experience in maintaining, installing and repairing a variety of electrical, electronic, control instrumentation.

License:

Possess and maintain a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.

Physical Requirements:

Discriminate among colors required for cable color coding. Work confined spaces and to a height of 40 feet.

Other Requirements:

Must be willing to handle after-hours emergency calls. Must be clean shaven in order to wear respirator protection or other safety equipment to comply with OSHA Rules and Regulations.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

• Codes, standard terms, practices and modern methods common to the electrical trade.
• Use and operation of measuring and testing devices, hand tools and equipment of the Trade.
• National Electrical Code and Cal-OSHA.
• Principles of electrical installation, maintenance, operation and testing.

Ability to:

• Plan, lay out and execute electrical work.
• Install, maintain and repair electrical wiring, motors and other electrical equipment.
• Read and interpret wiring diagrams and specifications.
• Make estimates of labor and materials.
• Keep records and make reports.
• Use initiative and independent judgment with established guidelines.
• Effectively communicate orally.
