DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, to perform a variety of routine and semi-skilled maintenance and construction duties in Zone 7 treatment plants and field distribution systems; and to perform related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This class performs routine mechanical maintenance, painting, carpentry and related plant and equipment maintenance work. It is distinguished from Plant Mechanic, Zone 7, which is responsible for performing skilled mechanical maintenance and repair work.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Performs preventive maintenance work on pumps, motors, valves, compressors and related plant and distribution system equipment; lubricates and changes oil; adjusts or replaces hoses, belts and valves.
2. Prepares surfaces and paints plant and distribution system equipment and facilities; mixes and applies paints and protective coatings.
3. Installs or assists in the installation of piping systems, including PVC, copper, galvanized, AC, etc.
4. Performs building and facilities maintenance, repair and construction work, including carpentry, painting, minor electrical and plumbing work.
5. Performs fabrication and welding work.
6. Estimates and secures materials, tools and equipment required for assigned tasks.
7. Operates a variety of hand, power and shop tools used in the work; operates boom trucks and forklifts.
8. Prepares basic records and logs of work performed.
9. Observes safe work methods and safety precautions related to the work.
10. Assists Plant Mechanics on major projects as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either I

The equivalent of two years of experience in mechanical or building trades maintenance work, which has provided the required knowledge and skills.

Or II

The equivalent of one year of experience as a Laborer in the Building Maintenance Division of the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

License:

Possession of a valid California Driver’s license.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

• Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in basic mechanical maintenance, plumbing, painting, carpentry and related building trades work.
• Basic shop math.
• Safe work methods and safety precautions related to the work.

Ability to:

• Perform basic mechanical maintenance, plumbing, painting, carpentry and related building trades work.
• Follow written and oral directions.
• Complete work assignments independently.
• Use safety equipment and observe safe work methods.
• Operate and maintain tools and equipment used in the work.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.

Other Requirements:

• Must be willing to work in exposure to potentially hazardous materials, in confined spaces, and outdoors in all weather conditions. Must possess strength sufficient to perform heavy manual labor.
