DESCRIPTION

Under close supervision, to perform limited technical engineering drafting, office engineering, construction inspection, materials testing, facility inspection, data gathering in connection with water resources investigations on a trainee basis; and perform related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Engineering Aide is a trainee-level class in the sub-professional Engineering series found only in the Public Works Agency. Positions in this class perform a variety of technical sub-professional engineering and inspection duties, including filing, interpreting and defining maps and recorded legal documents; assist in inspection of construction and maintenance projects; drafting, materials testing, traffic engineering and water resources engineering. They may also perform a variety of non-technical functions such as providing the public with information, recording complaints, maps, permits and records; maintaining and updating files maps and ordering supplies; and operating a radio-telephone and map duplicating machines.

Positions in the next higher classes and their incumbents perform work of greater complexity, under less supervision than incumbents in the class of Engineering Aide.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Performs sub-professional engineering drafting duties and makes related calculations; relates and assists in the interpretation and compilation of legal documents and maps; from survey notes, reduces cross sections and profiles and plots to a given scale; makes minor arithmetic computations; uses a planimeter, drafting machines, calculations and adding machines for area and quantity estimates; also operates and maintains engineering tools and equipment as required.

2. Assists in the gathering and processing of data for use in the investigation and analysis of traffic and safety matters. Uses common measuring and tabulating devices for gathering and processing data for studies; and prepares drawings and sketches for proposed channelization, stripping, pavement marking and delineation.

3. Learns material and soil sampling and testing in the field and laboratory; uses test equipment such as grading sieves and screens; rattlers and field density and moisture gauge; exercises materials control on a field project at a batching plant.

4. Assists in the inspection of a variety of construction and maintenance projects and facilities such as concrete lined channels, earth channels, culverts, pipelines, bridges, roads and related structures; assists in determining if construction contractor is conforming with contract plans and specifications; assists in determining structural and operational integrity of such facilities.

5. Assists in the inspection of well construction and destruction; issues well permits; obtains, monitors and compiles hydrological data.

6. Provides information and maintains data regarding questions concerning street light services in conjunction with P G & E; maintains outage reports and submits them to the appropriate agency(s).

7. Reviews and processes traffic accident reports regarding public property damage. Requests and receives quotes for repairs, prepares requisitions from work orders, receives invoices, reconciles purchase orders, calculates labor hours, equipment and material costs; contacts appropriate contractor(s) for repairs or maintenance to be completed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I

Successful completion of courses in drafting, algebra, trigonometry and closely related subjects.

Or II

The equivalent of six months of full-time experience in a sub-professional engineering position.

Or III

The equivalent of one year of experience as a Public Works Aide performing sub-professional engineering duties in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

License:

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
