DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, to act as lead over a group of Offset Equipment Operators; to operate an offset machine for reproducing typewritten and other copy in one or more colors from master metal or paper plate; to clean, make adjustments, and perform minor repairs on the machine; to operate a camera for making master plates; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

The one position in this class is distinguished from positions in the next lower class of Offset Equipment Operator II by its lead and resource responsibilities. The incumbent is the lead over a group of Offset Equipment Operator II’s. While other operators are normally assigned one machine, the senior is assigned two, a 15-inch 1250 Multilith and a 17-inch Davidson 233, and acts as a technical resource person to the offset printing unit.

The supervision of the offset unit is provided by a working supervisor, Central Services, who oversees the day-to-day activities of the print shop.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Receives orders for offset reproduction with master metal or paper plates and runs the required number of copies, observing established priorities.

2. Prepares machine for operation, cleaning rollers, choosing correct blanket for type of master to be used, adjusting machine for paper type and weight, adjusting flow of repellent solution and bringing ink to proper consistency; adjusts machine to center printing properly on page.

3. Consults with supervisor regarding substantial changes in design or makeup that are necessary to complete an assigned order.

4. After run, cleans machine parts and master plates; applies preservative to metal plates and stores in files; makes adjustments to machine and may replace standard damaged parts.

5. Maintains file of master plates needed for reruns.

6. May type or draw copy and make masters by Xerox process using a camera, making adjustments to enlarge or reduce size of image on plate if necessary; regulates time of exposure and use of filter; make masters by direct exposure and burning methods; work with Xerox, Itek or 3M mats.

7. May cut paper to required size, drill holes, assemble multi-paged runs in proper order, gather, pad, fold, and perform other bindery tasks.

8. Operates other machines such as typewriter and letter folding machines and may be called upon to do a variety of clerical tasks of average difficulty.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either I

The equivalent of one year of experience in the class of Offset Equipment Operator II in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

Or II

The equivalent of two years of journey-level experience in the operation of offset equipment.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

• Types, qualities, weights and uses of paper, inks, solvents and various patented products made for use with offset machines.
• Offset machines and methods of adjusting them for operation.
• Modern office methods and machines.

Abilities:

• Making layouts and designing forms from rough copy.
• Operating and adjusting an offset machine in an efficient manner.
• Understanding work orders and following instructions.
• Providing technical assistance to others.
• Planning and laying out large volumes of work and completing it according to established priority.
