DESCRIPTION

Under direction, Infrastructure Services Engineers manage various infrastructure technologies.  Areas of responsibility can include staff supervision; network; servers; unified communications; Cloud-based services; database technologies; GIS; Enterprise Tools Administration; information security; or endpoint management; and perform other related duties as required.    

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES  

This classification is the advanced senior level class in the multi-disciplinary, professional Infrastructure Engineering series located in the Information Technology Department.  The class of Infrastructure Services Engineer is responsible for the design, support, and maintenance of complex enterprise production systems, and may be responsible for staff supervision.   

This class is distinguished from the Infrastructure Services Manager in that the latter is responsible for all production systems within their area of responsibility, whereas the Infrastructure Services Engineer is responsible for the management of specific production systems.  The class of Infrastructure Services Engineer is further distinguished from the class of Senior Infrastructure Services Analyst, in that the latter is responsible for managing portions of specific production systems, as well as less complex projects, while the former is responsible for the management of specific production systems in their entirety.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE:    The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification.  However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level.  Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  1. Meets with representatives from other County departments to analyze departmental business requirements.
  2. Develops project plans, acts as lead on enterprise level scale projects; assigns project staff, provides guidance and direction for designated projects, communicates with executive level customers, develops project success metrics, and monitors the timeline and resources of all projects under their lead.
  3. May supervise and delegate work to staff.
  4. Architects and leads the highest level technical configurations, serves as an escalation resource for troubleshooting system issues, and may lead incident management coordination.  Resolves the situation to the satisfaction of the requestor.
  5. May be responsible for planning and implementing information security systems.
  6. May supervise operations, monitoring and support services including provisioning of user accounts and working with other groups to ensure timely user access that adheres to security policies.
  7. Architects and leads the plans and activities around systems maintenance best practices and systems optimization.
  8. Responsible for the daily maintenance of all production systems, including but not limited to; security hardening, implementing updates, defining disaster recovery and monitoring approaches.
  9. Participates in, and may lead, the planning, recommendation, and implementation of changes to operating system platforms, system hardware and related technologies in support of organizational goals.
  10. Coordinates with vendors and contractors on technical details, projects, and project related deliverables, and works with them to troubleshoot technical issues.
  11. Recommends and presents new technologies and/or information security initiatives to management.
  12. Develops initiates and leads efforts contributing to an innovative and strategically aligned team.
  13. Creates customer and diagnostic reports; maintains inventory of hardware and software; inventory tracking; monitors contract provisions and hardware and software contracts.
  14. Creates and maintains system procedural and technical documentation including project statuses and adding sufficient notes to assigned tickets.  
  15. Researches new technical developments, attends trainings, seminars and programs to remain current on the trends of the information technology industry.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

           EITHER I          

Experience:  

The equivalent of one (1) year of full-time experience in the class of Senior Infrastructure Services Analyst or in an equivalent or higher-level class in the Alameda County classified service. 

OR II

Experience:  

The equivalent of four (4) years of full-time increasingly responsible infrastructure experience (in one or more of the areas described in Definition section), that included design and implementation of enterprise systems requiring documentation and project management.   (Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of experience.)  

Special Requirements:  

  • Must be available to participate in an on-call rotation and to work after hours, weekends and holidays.
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid class C driver’s license may be required for some positions.  

NOTE:    The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.
