DESCRIPTION
DEFINITION:

Under supervision and in the capacity of a trainee, to work on any shift initially learning to process all computer output, microfiche, printed reports using decollating and detaching machines, and to prepare all reports for distribution.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is the trainee class for a specialized four class series. Direction may be received from a Computer Operator I or II or higher classification. Positions in this class differ from those in the next higher class of Data Processing Technician II in that incumbents of the lower level class are trainees and learning the duties of a Data Processing Technician II, whereas the latter have at least six months’ training and are fully competent in the set up, operation and monitoring of data processing distribution room equipment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Learns the operation and maintenance of equipment used.

2. If in the Data Processing Department, completes required in-house computer technical courses as defined by the department.

3. Checks all reports for quality.

4. Processes reports using decollating, imprinting, and detaching machines.

5. Prepares all reports for distribution by sorting and fastening.

6. In a training capacity operates distribution room equipment; notifies lead person of equipment trouble and works with equipment maintenance personnel in locating the source of the problem; learns the concepts of operating complex computers and their auxiliary equipment.

7. May drive a motor vehicle to deliver late output.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either I

The equivalent of six months of full-time paid experience operating computer equipment.

Or

Successful completion of three units in data processing from an accredited college, university or technical institution, such as an Introduction to Data Processing Course or other comparable course or training.

Special Requirement:

The Computer Services Division in some departments operates on a 24 hour-per-day, 7 day-per-week, 365 day-per-year basis. In order to provide these services, all Computer Services Division employees may be required to work grave, swing and day shifts, as well as weekends and holidays as necessary.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the "Examples of Duties" section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

• Modern data processing methods and procedures.
• Operating methods and uses of on-line and off-line data processing equipment, the components and materials necessary for processing batch jobs and real-time jobs through large-scale computer systems.

Ability to:

• Follow written and oral instructions.
• Learn to operate large scale computers and their auxiliary equipment.
• Speak clearly and concisely so as to be understood on the telephone and in person.
• Communicate technical details verbally and in writing to programmers, vendors, users and others in an effective and understandable manner in order to achieve timely problem resolution.
• Exercise independent judgment and initiative in identifying and resolving complex technical problems.

Physical Characteristics:

Ability to lift 50-pound boxes, to stand for long periods of time and to climb ladders.

License Requirement:

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License is an ongoing requirement.
