DESCRIPTION
Work under close supervision performing a combination of simple to complex tasks necessary to assist in performing implementations, deployments and/or maintenance. Provide technical and informational support of the systems managed by the designated workgroup. Assist with the development of documentation, data analysis, project assistance and other related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is the entry/trainee level in a specialized, flexibly staffed four classification series responsible for the support of various computer information systems. Incumbents in this classification will work under the direct supervision of the respective workgroup appointed administrative staff.

This classification is unique to the Information Technology Department (ITD). It is distinguished from information technology classifications in other departments in that the latter provide operation, maintenance, development and/or technical or user support services at various levels with respect to systems utilized within those departments/agencies or between a limited number of departments/agencies. Although they function at the entry level and in a training capacity, Information Technology Specialists I are involved with the performance of information processing and output functions with respect to the full range of systems utilized by and between ITD and all of its customer departments/agencies for the benefit of those departments/agencies.

This classification is distinguished from the next higher class of Information Technology Specialist II in that Information Technology Specialists I function in a trainee capacity and under close supervision, receiving instruction in procedures, maintenance, support activities and/or the operation of computer related peripheral equipment used in the performance of data output, processing and distribution. During the course of this training, Information Technology Specialists I are expected to achieve a level of proficiency in these activities that will allow their performance on an independent basis and under general supervision at the next higher level in the series. In contrast, incumbents at the Information Technology Specialist II level perform these duties independently, under general supervision, and not in a trainee capacity.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.


1. Participates in the ITD Information Technology Specialist I Training Program. Completes required in-house computer technical courses and training projects as directed by the department.

2. Learns the operation and maintenance of equipment required by the various information systems supported; learns operational schedules and coordination procedures.

3. Learns to validate data output for quality and ensures compliance with processing instructions.

4. Learns the required procedures for distributing data output.

5. Learns to access and refers to information provided to determine and comply with distribution instructions.

6. Learns to operate and maintain job related equipment; notifies lead person of equipment trouble and works with equipment maintenance personnel in locating the source of the problem; learns the concepts of operating complex computer systems and their auxiliary equipment.

7. Learns tasks for all functional areas of the assigned workgroup.

8. May drive a motor vehicle to support the requirements of the job function.

9. Learns applicable technology, language or application to complete required tasks.

10. Develops familiarity with existing systems and applications.

11. Checks all work for completeness and accuracy.

12. Delivers excellent customer service.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either I

The equivalent of six months of full-time experience operating computer equipment and/or supporting computer applications.

Or

Successful completion of a minimum of three semester (or equivalent quarter) units in information technology at an accredited college, university or technical institution such as an Introduction to Information Technology Course or other comparable course or training.

License Requirement:

Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid class C California driver's license may be required for some positions.

Special Requirements:

1. Information Technology Specialists I who successfully complete training at this level will be advanced to the next flexibly staffed level, Information Technology Specialist II, upon successful completion of training. For this reason, it is a job expectation that incumbents successfully complete the ITD Information Technology Specialist I Training Program within six months and it is a requirement that they do so in no more than twelve months. In completing the Training Program, Information Technology Specialists I are expected to learn the duties performed by Information Technology Specialists II and to become capable of performing them under general (as distinguished from close) supervision.

2. The Information Technology Department operates on a 24 hour-per-day, 7 day-per-week, 365 day-per-year basis. In order to provide these services, all Information Technology Department employees may be required to work grave, swing and day shifts, as well as weekends and holidays as necessary.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

• Basic operating methods and uses of various computer information systems, the basic components and materials necessary for processing batch jobs and real-time jobs through enterprise computer systems.

• Communicate technical details to programmers, vendors, users and others in an effective and understandable manner in order to achieve timely problem resolution.
