DESCRIPTION

Under instruction and close supervision, to learn to perform entry level tasks in the various departments of the General Services Agency. As the incumbent learns the various tasks, supervision is reduced and instruction becomes less detailed.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is an entry level classification responsible for performing a variety of tasks and providing assistance in the General Services Agency including in the crafts and Trades, Janitorial, Grounds keeping, Communications, Motor Vehicle, Parking and Property and Salvage divisions within the General Services Agency. This class differs from semi-skilled and skilled classifications in that it does not require specific training or experience.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. In the Property & Salvage division sorts, recycles and bundles items, loads and unloads trucks and moves furniture; refuels vehicles. May repair small office equipment.
2. Picks up and delivers small items, documents or material using a County van or light truck.
3. Unloads supplies and stocks supply rooms. Informs supervisor of low supply items.
4. Assists Gardeners with sweeping, weeding, digging, planting and watering of landscaped areas throughout the County. Assists with cleaning and maintenance of gardening equipment.
5. Assists Janitorial staff with moving furniture, setting up conference rooms and cleaning of offices of facilities within the County.
6. Assists Janitorial staff with window and glass cleaning and polishing metal handrails, handles and restroom fixtures.
7. Assists Telecommunications Equipment Installers with removal and installation of radio transceivers in County vehicles.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Six months of paid experience in work similar to that performed by the General Services Agency such as landscaping, janitorial, crafts and trades, motor vehicle maintenance or other minor maintenance, communication or warehouse work.

License:

Must possess a valid California Motor Vehicle operator’s license.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.
