DESCRIPTION
Under close supervision, to do general manual and clerical work in a public library; and to do related work as required.


DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Positions in this class are found in the County Libraries. Incumbents perform general manual and clerical tasks under supervision and work a regular schedule including evenings and weekends as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.


1. Shelves books and other library resources according to the library’s classification system.

2. Maintains proper order and neatness of collections; arranges materials, shelves and fixtures to maximize browse-ability.

3. Collects materials from book drop; receives bins of library material received from other branches.

4. Retrieves materials for use from non-public areas.

5. Checks in and sorts materials using a computer terminal, automated materials handling system, or other equipment.

6. Answers patrons’ basic location questions for material and services and refers patrons to appropriate staff for more complex questions or service needs.

7. Directs patrons to library self-service options such as self-checkout machines, catalog stations, and kiosks.

8. Assists in setup and takedown of library meeting spaces.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of the following knowledge and abilities:

• Must be age 16 by examination closing date.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

• Move large amounts of books from shelves, floors, bins and carts.
• Pay sufficient attention to detail.
